Spotlight: “Expert Generalist” Aly Jumahttps://in-id.about.flipboard.com/magmaker/spotlight-aly-juma

My name is Aly Juma and my medium is information.

My love of learning is driven by my generalist outlook on life. I’ve always been supremely curious about everything—Always Be Curious, as my magazine is titled—and found it hard to settle for any one thing. I studied engineering in college and subsequently worked for an advertising agency in Tanzania, which lead to grad school in France.

I’ve always followed my passions wherever they take me. Now I’m focused on designing T-shirts, writing, and working as a business intelligence consultant. You can learn more about me at alyjuma.com.

I use Flipboard to educate myself on a variety of subjects, curate my favorite articles into my own magazines for others to enjoy, and keep track of content that I can use for future projects. Flipboard makes organizing content simple.

Flipboard is also great for discovering new content. I love to read Fast Company, TED and Brain Pickings, but I also find amazing articles from other user-curated magazines that I wouldn’t have otherwise encountered.

My biggest influences are the polymath greats: Malcolm Gladwell, who first got me into non-fiction storytelling; Seth Godin’s brilliant insights on marketing; and Elon Musk’s incredible ability to manifest the unseemly.

Check out some of Juma’s magazines:

Spotlight: iPad Artist Raheem “Ra” Nelsonhttps://in-id.about.flipboard.com/magmaker/five-questions-ipad-artist-raheem-ra-nelson

My name is Raheem Nelson—Ra for short—and my medium is iPad art.

My love of drawing started when I was 5. My parents drew for me and at 7, I started doing it for myself and drawing, like, The Ninja Turtles. Eventually I got my confidence up and started drawing my own comic books. I love the discipline and process of making a comic book: writing, inking, coloring duties. I took it upon myself to do all those roles, and be a multifaceted artist from a young age.

I use Flipboard to keep me inspired and educated when it comes to the art world, to teach myself how the art market works through research, and by staying up-to-date on the intersection of the art and tech worlds. I love to read IGN, Artnet, and ArtBusiness.com—it’s very educational and helpful for artists who don’t want to deal with day-to-day business dealings.

Flipboard is also great as a portfolio because I don’t have to be in the same room as someone—they can just flip, flip, flip through different pieces of mine.

Ra iPad Art by Ra
People that inspire me are David Kassan and Jorge Colombo—David dabbles in iPad art, and Jorge creates art on his iPhone, and does covers for the New Yorker on his iPad. I feel extremely lucky to have them as mentors.

A big influence is Austin Kleon. His book “Steal Like An Artist” was life-changing for me. I teach my students that, too. It’s OK to be influenced. We’re all remixes of our influences.

Spotlight On: The Many Facets of Brazilhttps://in-id.about.flipboard.com/inside-flipboard/spotlight-on-the-many-facets-of-brazil

null

Whenever I say I am from Brazil, I usually get a big smile and comments about soccer and the country’s beautiful beaches. The friendly attitude of many Brazilians and the amazing landscapes of South America’s largest and only Portuguese-speaking country are well known.

But Brazil has many facets that go beyond carnival, samba and futbol.

You can’t define a place with a single broad stroke, and this is especially true for Brazil. With its paradisiac beaches, delicious food, creative music, infamous favelas and deep social problems, Brazil is a country of striking contrasts. It has a vast supply of natural resources, yet suffers with poverty and social inequality. It has a sophisticated business sector and a large consumer market, but it lags behind in global education and infrastructure. It’s an enormous country with searing heat in the north to snow in the south, and amazes visitors with the modernity of its megacities and the wilderness of its Amazon rainforest.

After over a decade living in the U.S., there are things I miss about Brazil: the solidarity, sensuality, joy and openness that are hallmarks of its people. But I’m glad that my job as a Flipboard curator allows me to keep in touch with Brazil’s culture and readers. Here are some magazines that remind me of home:

Brazil-Brasil-Brasile-Brésil-Brasilien by Bia Valle: Facts, figures and fun about Brazil.

Oh Brazil! by Bibi Voyles: News and insights on Brazil.

Travel Diary Brazil by Flipboard Photo Desk Presented By Microsoft: Photo essays created during the World Cup, documenting the many faces and places in the country.

Graffiti, Street Art & Mural Brazil by RedeFric: Brazilian creativity stamped in the streets.

Awesome Capoeira by Gloria Lin: The beauty and flow of Brazilian dance-fighting.

Travel Brazil by Tony Galvez: News, info and travel tips.

Spotlight On: Travel Back to Japan Through Flipboardhttps://in-id.about.flipboard.com/inside-flipboard/spotlight-on-travel-back-to-japan-through-flipboard

Every time I look at a Flipboard magazine from Japan, I feel I transported back to my country, which I left in 2005 to become a freelance editor. I’ve since found my way to Palo Alto, California, where I now work as Flipboard’s Japanese curator and international coordinator. Of course, there are parts of Japan I don’t miss—the bureaucracy, packed subways and never-ending work hours. But these magazines remind me of some of my country’s best things, such as people’s generosity and cooperation, the great food and peaceful neighborhoods.

My favorite Japanese magazines on Flipboard include the ones into which the curator flips personal photos that offer a glimpse into Tokyo life . Take a look:

きちでんせいけんフォトライフ by きちでんせいけん: This collection of street photography was taken by an artist in Tokyo. While the photos are all recent, the colors and lights make me nostalgic.

世界を旅する写真 by sawaflip : Travel lover sawaflip took Instagram photographs throughout the world and created a Flipboard magazine with them. These beautiful pictures feel like a coffee table book in a magazine layout.

シロの休日 by u7046 : The main character of this peaceful magazine is a fluffy cat named “Shiro,” (“white” in Japanese) who likes to walk around the neighborhood.

LIFE WITH CATS by enjoynews: Also featuring cats, this magazine captures the daily life of two felines who live with this curator.

コップのフチ子 by chimateer: This magazine gathers photos of a small, popular figure in Japan called “Cup no Fuchi-ko,” a little toy girl meant to sit on the edge of a cup. Photos of this figure in various scenes have been going viral in Japan, so user chimatter collected them into this magazine.

5 Curators to Follow If You Love Gourmet Foodhttps://in-id.about.flipboard.com/inside-flipboard/5-curators-to-follow-if-you-love-gourmet-food

Food is many things: sustenance, an excuse to take a break, a chance to taste the world’s diversity. For some people, it’s more, shall we say, refined; for them, food is an art. Which helps explain the existence of gourmet food, both an industry classification for “high-quality premium foods” and an aesthetic one, referring to “elaborate preparations and presentations.”

The concept of gourmet food dates back to France, where a gourmet originally referred to a “connoisseur of delicious things not eaten primarily for refinement.” Modern definitions of gourmet food are elastic, and mostly about simple appreciation and pleasure—say hello to the “foodie.” Semantics aside, Flipboard is full of people who celebrate the diversity of gourmet food—from bloggers to famous chefs—and we’ve picked five of them for you to sample below:

Ruth Reichl: When we interviewed Ruth Reichl last year, we were expecting to hear some great stories from one of the world’s foremost authorities on food. What surprised us, however, was that the former Editor-in-Chief of Gourmet Magazine had gone pleasantly soft. These days the once-feared food critic prefers to champion food she likes, rather than discuss what she doesn’t. In her Flipboard Magazine, she advocates expanding our palates.

Aly Juma: What separates entrepreneur and ideas man Aly Juma from your average daydreamer is his level of passion and devotion. By the looks of his magazines, Aly exhaustively flips articles from a range of sources, making any one of his mags a deep dive into any subject—especially food.

Victor Moruzzi: When it comes to food, Victor doesn’t discriminate. Hot dogs to hot chocolate, Victor’s love for edibles and drinkables qualifies him as a lover of good eats. But his magazine Plating, which shows a variety of beautifully presented dishes, meets the definition of a gourmet food fan.

Whiskey and Soba: In simple terms, the democratization of gourmet food means that more people in more places can eat the type of food that was once reserved for cultural capitals like New York City, Paris or London. One such recent food mecca is St. Louis, home of food writer Spencer Pernikoff’s Whiskey and Soba. Pernikoff is a one-man food magazine, profiling chefs, writing food-focused city guides and taking creative liberties with his leftovers. On Flipboard, Whiskey and Soba showcases this signature high and low approach to gourmet food.

Chef Daniel Boulud: With multiple restaurants and Michelin stars to his name, Chef Daniel Boulud isn’t just a fan of gourmet food—he’s a certified master. Hailed as “America’s most relentless, fun-seeking, demanding and revered chef,” Boulud curates a number of excellent magazines on Flipboard which are as much about the world as they are gourmet food.

Photo Friday: Find Photography Inspiration in The Shothttps://in-id.about.flipboard.com/inside-flipboard/photo-friday-find-photography-inspiration-in-the-shot

Every Wednesday for a little over a year now, we’ve been releasing The Shot, a magazine about all things photography inspiration curated by Flipboard’s photo editors, Steve Fine and Gary Hershorn. Besides the practical gear roundups and tutorials, what makes The Shot so essential is the spotlight shined on some of the world’s best photographers.

Last year, at the height of the Ebola crisis, The Shot featured photojournalist Kieran Kesner. What followed was a harrowing, intimate account of the world’s deadliest disease seen through the lens of a young photographer. On the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, The Shot spoke with shooter Rick Wilking, who lived literally in the eye of the storm and took photos of the aftermath. Wilking told us he sees pictures as a way to teach the next generation “this generation’s mistakes and successes.” And when a massive earthquake struck Nepal, The Shot made space for photographer Omar Havana to share what was happening in devastating, unforgettable detail.

Next week, expect to see a spotlight on Wasteland Weekend, “the world’s largest post-apocalyptic festival,” and stories from the photo conference Photoplus, where major camera manufacturers unveil upcoming products. As news breaks, you’ll also be able to see the reliably brilliant photo galleries focusing on major events of the day.

Want to see our changing planet up close and personal? Do Leicas live up to the hype? In need of photography inspiration to get out and shoot from the world’s best photojournalists and Instagrammers? Follow The Shot to get this carefully curated content delivered straight to your Cover Stories.

9to5Mac Editor Mark Gurman on the Apple iOS 9 Launch, Apple News and Morehttps://in-id.about.flipboard.com/inside-flipboard/9to5mac-editor-mark-gurman-on-the-apple-ios-9-launch-apple-news-and-more

On Wednesday Apple will announce iOS 9, two new phones and a hotly anticipated overhaul to Apple TV—at least, that’s according to the rumors we’ve read. One person who might know for sure is 9to5Mac Editor Mark Gurman.

While in high school, Gurman was the first to report on the release of the iPad. That earned him a job at 9to5Mac, where he continues to break stories coming from Cupertino.

We spoke with Gurman himself about what to expect from Apple—now, and in the future.

What are you most looking forward to from the iOS 9 launch?
I think that the new time saving features in iOS 9, like the new Spotlight/Proactive screen, will resonate with customers.

What do you make of Apple News?
We’ll have to see the marketing push behind Apple News. I think the sky’s the limit for the app, but it will depend on how it resonates with users early on. Apple has not had the best track record with new services as of late, but of course their seemingly endless resources could change that at any time.

You started covering Apple in high school. Tell us about your first introduction to the company, and how you subsequently became an Apple devotee.
I became interested in Apple early in my life, receiving an iPod Mini one year for my birthday. Over the next many years, I became even more interested in closely following and researching the company. These days, I cover them.

What are some of the most interesting things happening at the company right now?
It’s definitely an interesting time at Apple. The iPhone and iPad are at a maturity point where the product offerings line-up very closely with some of the capability of competitors. Look for Apple to distance itself over the next several years by injecting new features into their operating systems. Apple is also working on a new TV box as well as future versions of the Apple Watch, so expanding new product lines is always exciting for a company.

What can you tell us about Apple TV?
This year’s Apple TV will be a big update, with a new iOS 9 core powering it, a tweaked design, system-wide Siri navigation, an App Store a new, more advanced remote control.

Why only cover Apple? Why not use your strong investigative skills to report on the rest of the industry?
I started covering Apple because it was the company I was more interested in when I started my career. Looking at this situation from a modern perspective, I like to think that everyone has an iPhone. Everyone has an iPad. Apple is a very popular topic that people resonate with. The company has become part of so many lives in popular culture, among my friends, and among my family, and it is difficult to name another company with a similar following. Perhaps Facebook, Google, and Amazon, and a I dabble into stories on those companies from time to time as well.

What is it about Apple that commands such loyalty?
I think that the annual update cycle for their biggest product lines has helped develop such a following. That in addition to the rumors cycle that sometimes even kicks off days after a new device is announced.
